Another setback for Historic Downtown-Old Town Elk Grove as another brewery closes
March 23 at the former Coatza Brewery in Elk Grove.

By all appearances, a Historic Downtown-Old Town Elk Grove brewery has seized operations.

A visit to the Coatza Brewery at 9251 Elk Grove Blvd. in Old Town Elk Grove reveals a closed sign on the front door with no further information.  Google and Yelp say the establishment is permanently closed.

The late afternoon visit today showed indications that it had stopped operations. When called this afternoon, the phone was not answered.

Coatza is the second brewery operation at that location. It was previously occupied by Hungry Pecker Brewery, which sold the business to Coatza.

Hungry Pecker opened in October 2020 and closed after about two years. Coatza took over the operation in February 2023.

A review of social media shows a March 1 posting at the brewery by Elk Grove District 2 City Councilman Rod Brewer. Historic Downtown-Old Town Elk Grove is in District 2.

The closure is another setback for the long-beleaguered special planning area. Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen has frequently said the district can become the local equivalent of San Diego's famed Gaslamp District.

Coatza's closure is another casualty for Elk Grove's fledgling efforts to make the city a mini-brewery hub. Previously, Dreaming Dog and Titled Mash breweries had gone out of business.

With these closures, the city's BReW incentive program has become irrelevant. Headed by Elk Grove's economic development director Darrell Doan, BReW was an incentive program to attract more breweries.

Notably, one taproom operation, Dust Bowl, also located in Historic Downtown-Old Town Elk Grove, is flourishing.

In December, the much-hyped Slow and Low restaurant in Historic Downtown-Old Town Elk Grove closed after only six months in operation. The establishment received a $500,000 loan guarantee from Elk Grove.
