Big Oil backing Nguyen’s Assembly campaign with $799,000 TV ad buy
Financial disclosures filed today with the California Secretary of State show that the same independent expenditure committee spending $1.2 million on behalf of a State Senate District 8 candidate will also spend over $799,000 for an Assembly District 10 candidate.
The “Coalition to Restore California’s Middle Class, Including Energy Companies who Produce Gas, Oil, Jobs and Pay Taxes” filing reveals they have allocated $799,548 in TV advertisements supporting Assembly District 10 candidate Stephanie Nguyen.
An Elk Grove City Council member, Nguyen is facing fellow Democrat, Sacramento City Councilmember Eric Guerra.
Some of the business interests contributing to the independent expenditure committee include:
- Valero $2,000,000
- Chevron $2,000,000
- Philips 66 – $2,000,000
- Marathon Petroleum $1,000,000
Although oil contributions in the Assembly District 10 race have not been an issue as they are in the contentious State Senate District 8 race, Nguyen has several policy stances similar to outgoing District 9 Assemblymember and Sacramento County Sheriff-elect Jim Cooper. During his four terms in the Assembly, Cooper received extensive oil industry support.
One of Cooper’s top Assembly staff members and campaign consultants has also been affiliated with Nguyen’s campaign.
