Brewer declares victory in Elk Grove City Council District 2 race
Elk Grove City Councilmember-elect, Rod Brewer.

With Tuesday’s vote tallies from Sacramento County Voter Registration and Elections, Rod Brewer has issued a statement on his victory in the Elk Grove City Council District 2 contest.

Brewer, who competed with Felipe Martin and Michelle Kile for the eastern Elk Grove city council district, captured 5,936 votes for a plurality of 42 percent. Martin came in second with 4,330 votes for 31 percent, followed by Kile, who received 3,631 votes for 26 percent.

“I received a phone call from Felipe Martin on Tuesday congratulating me for winning the city council contest,” Brewer said. “Michelle Kile extended her congratulations through Facebook Messenger on November 21.”

Brewer, a current member of the Cosumnes Community Services District Board of Directors since 2010, will replace Pat Hume. With Brewer’s victory, the District 2 seat flipped from Republican to Democrat.

However, since Brewer could not run for the CCSD, his seat will now be occupied by a Republican. Angela Spease, the only person who sought the seat, will be appointed to the position.

The battle for the District 2 seat was viewed as a proxy battle between factions of Elk Grove Democrats. Brewer was supported by Democratic Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen and the Democratic Party of Sacramento County, while Democratic officials, including Elk Grove Vice Mayor Darren Suen, Elk Grove City Councilmember and Assemblymember-elect Stephanie Nguyen, and Assemblymember and Sacramento County Sheriff-elect Jim Cooper endorsed Martin.

Brewer will take his oath on December 14 for a four-year term. Countywide, there are less than 12,000 uncounted ballots.
