Cops catch crook in the act
A person suspected of attempting to break into an Elk Grove business was caught in the act by cops cruising for crooks.
According to Elk Grove Police, a detective sergeant and his team early this morning were on the lookout for people burglars, mail thieves, and specifically catalytic converter thieves’ Just after 5 a.m. the sergeant pulled into a shopping center on Bond Road and E. Stockton Boulevard area and saw a man with a crowbar crouched down in front of a closed business’s front doors.
After seeing the unmarked police vehicle, the suspect, Robert McCaughern, 51, of El Dorado, left the area. With his team’s assistance, the suspect was taken into custody a short distance away.
A probation search of McCaughern’s vehicle led to the discovery of additional burglary tools. McCaughern was arrested for attempted burglary, possession of burglary tools, resisting arrest, and possession of a controlled substance.
McCaughern is held on a $500,000 bail and will be arraigned on August 29.
