Elk Grove District 1 City Councilman Darren Suen offered addlebrained justifications  including the cost of dry cleaning his suits for city council meetings, as justification  for what could be up to a 300 percent pay increase.

During the Wednesday, August 28 Elk Grove City Council meeting, Councilman Darren Suen made some odd remarks about why he and his colleague should get a substantial pay increase. Suen, typically coherent during meetings, offered a rambling, often incomprehensible statement and reasons why he should enjoy up to a 300-plus percent pay increase.

Part of Suen's reasoning is that, as a council member, he acts as a volunteer, and he should be paid as such. Suen also noted as a council member, there are extra costs associated with attending meetings like dry cleaning (see video below).

Without saying his name, Councilman Kevin Spease mocked Suen's obtuse reasoning. Spease said he views his elected position as community service.

Addressing Suen's dry cleaning justification, Spease added, "I got to pay for my [dry]cleaning anyway because I work, I wear these same exact clothes."
