District 1 City Councilmember Darren Suen appointed Assemblymember Stephanie Nguyen’s Chief of Staff
Elk Grove City Councilmember Darren Suen is now working in the state capitol.

Elk Grove District 1 City Councilmember Darren Suen has announced an employment change this weekend. On social media, Suen announced his appointment as Chief of Staff for California District 10 Assemblymember Stephanie Nguyen. Suen’s appointment was effecting July 1, and he starts his new job at the State Capitol today.

Suen is the longest-serving current member of the city council. Appointed in 2015 to a vacancy created by Jim Cooper’s election to the California Assembly, Suen was elected to a full term in 2016 and reelected in 2020. In 2018 Suen was unsuccessful in his bid to unseat former Elk Grove Mayor Steve Ly.

On his LinkedIn profile, Suen said:

Old dog, new tricks! Excitement as I begin a new and exciting career chapter as Chief of Staff for Assemblymember Stephanie Nguyen!

According to a job posting from California Assemblymember Dr. Akilah Weber, M.D., the chief of staff “serves as the Assemblymember’s principal staff advisor and is responsible for managing and overseeing the Capitol and District Offices.” Before this appointment, Mr. Suen was an engineer with the California Department of Water Resources.

Nguyen was elected to the Assembly in November 2022, succeeding Cooper, who successfully ran for Sacramento County Sheriff. Suen and Nguyen were city council colleagues for five years.

Interestingly, Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen announced Suen’s new position during the Wednesday, June 14 Elk Grove City Council meeting. Suen will retain his position on the Elk Grove City Council.
