One of the three competitive races for the Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Trustees has incumbent Area 1 Trustee Tony Perez challenged by Susan Davis. Perez was first elected to the board in 2012 and is seeking his fourth term for the district that is in Sacramento and serves the area around Florin High School.

During his board tenure, Perez has often been confrontational when dealing with colleagues and district staff during meetings, as seen in the Elk Grove News-produced video below. A view of any of the district's meetings over the last several years will show Perez regularly mixing it up with colleagues and staff.

On her campaign social media page, Ms. Davis included a timestamped video of a special August 20 EGUSD trustee meeting. The timestamps are queued to the meeting portions where Davis took Perez to task for what she characterized as disruptive (see Davis' posting, which includes the video).

As part of that posting, Davis wrote the following:

"After an hour of chaotic conduct, he walked out, leaving the board without a quorum and halting district business until the next meeting in two weeks. This delay affected critical personnel decisions and prevented important votes, effectively holding the district hostage to his actions."

Perez does not have a social media presence and does not appear to be using online tools for his reelection. In 2016, Perez was unopposed and easily won his third term in 2020, in a from-district election with over 80,000 votes for 58.8 percent.

Davis says Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen and EGUSD Trustees Michael Vargas and Gina Jamerson support her candidacy. Additionally, Davis has been endorsed by the politically potent Elk Grove Education Association, the collective bargaining unit for the district teachers.

The Sacramento County Democratic Party had previously endorsed Perez. However, that group has not posted an endorsement on its website for the Davis-Perez contest.
