Elk Grove Police arrest suspect on murder charges in 2021 fentanyl overdose death

Yesterday, Elk Grove Police arrested a 21-year-old Sacramento man on suspicion of murder relating to a 2021 fentanyl overdose death.

At approximately 8:39 p.m. on April 21, 2021, Elk Grove Police responded to Jones Family Park on Shasta Lilly Drive in north Elk Grove regarding an individual in a restroom who was not breathing and appeared to be overdosing. Despite the responding officer's attempts, the 17-year-old victim died.

The autopsy by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office determined the cause of death was fentanyl intoxication. Following an investigation, detectives identified Keon Tyron Taylor, 21, as the individual who had sold the victim pills on multiple occasions, including the day of the overdose.

On January 7, 2025, investigators, in conjunction with the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office Fentanyl Overdose Resolution Team (FORT), obtained an emergency arrest warrant for Taylor. The suspect was arrested yesterday in Sacramento.

Taylor was booked at the Sacramento County Main Jail on charges of Homicide (Penal Code 187 (a)) and Transportation of Controlled Substance (Health and Safety Code 11352 (a)) and is not eligible for release. Arraignment is tomorrow at 3 p.m. in Sacramento Superior Court Department 62.
