Gov. Newsom appoints Sacramento County Sheriff Jim Cooper to POST commission
Requires State Senate Confirmation
Sacramento County Sheriff Jim Cooper received an appointment yesterday from California Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Cooper, elected sheriff in June 2022, was appointed to the state Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). Before being elected sheriff, Cooper served in the California Assembly from 2014 to 2022, was a deputy in the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department from 1984 until 2014, where he rose to captain, and served on the Elk Grove City Council from 2004 to 2014.
The current commission has 11 members. Among the board members are California Attorney General Rob Bonta and former Sacramento Police Department Chief Rick Braziel.
The West Sacramento-based agency was legislatively formed in 1959. Their mission is “to set minimum selection and training standards for California law enforcement.”
Cooper, one of five Newsom appointments to the commission, requires State Senate confirmation, and there is no compensation. The commission holds quarterly meetings; the next one is scheduled for Orange on March 22.
