Gov. Newsom flogs Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen for her fair housing debacle at bill signing ceremony
Before signing this new slate of housing bills, California Gov. Gavin Newsom again highlighted Elk Grove's refusal of a housing project that he has said would assist disabled people.

During a San Francisco billing signing ceremony this morning, California Gov. Gavin Newsom continued his criticism of Elk Grove for violating fair housing laws. Newsom highlighted the resistance in Huntington Beach and Elk Grove, led by Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen, to providing low-income housing (see video below).

At another event, the governor noted that Singh-Allen's efforts were an attempt to deprive individuals he described as disabled of affordable housing. Thanks to a $10 million taxpayer-funded payoff to the proposed Oak Rose supportive affordable housing project developer, Singh-Allen, her city council, and a group of vocal anti-affordable housing advocates relocated the project to Elk Grove's northern border.

Newsom also noted that the state's seventh Regional Housing Needs Allocation (RHNA) will include standards to address homelessness and the statewide shortage of affordable housing. These new RHNA standards will lead to more supportive affordable housing units in Elk Grove to exit homelessness.

Summaries of the bills Newsom signed today can be viewed here and here. Newsom said there are 32 bills, including the seven he signed today addressing homelessness and affordable housing.

Mayor Singh-Allen has promoted Elk Grove as a welcoming community that is open to all. However, as Gov. Newsom describes it, Elk Grove is welcoming as long as you are not poor or disabled, which could be the intentions of Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen and her four city councilmen.
