Grover Envy - These Rancho Cordova goofballs make the Elk Grove Mayor, City Council appear responsible

The Elk Grove Mayor and her City Council don't come to mind when you think of serious and responsible representatives of the people. Whether it is admitted drunk driving, appearing as Ken, as in Barbie and Ken in public, taking campaign money from Big Tobacco, or making some adle-minded crockpot analogy, a super-majority of the people governing our city are obtuse.

Nonetheless, every now and then, another group of self-serving elected officials manages to outdo our dullards. In this case, the Rancho Cordova City Council is considering spending $1 million to create a city mascot!

Call it a case of Grover envy, as in the city of Elk Grove's long-established but seldom-seen mascot! Grover has been around for several years, and to the best of our memory, it was created during the tenure of former Elk Grove Mayor Gary Davis.

Say what you will about Davis and most past city council members, but we are sure they wouldn't be so reckless to even discuss the possibility of spending $1 million to create the reclusive Grover.

Given the effects of Trump's Tariffs, economic analysts and investment bankers like Goldman Sachs predict the American economy will likely enter a recession in the third quarter. If this happens, it is reasonable to foresee flat municipal sales tax growth, at a minimum, or more likely, a decline.

Since sales taxes are the lifeblood of municipalities like Elk Grove and Rancho Cordova, spending $1 million on a rocket mascot is beyond foolish in good times and especially in tough times.

Besides, who would you rather have your kids have their picture taken with and hug - a destructive military Rancho Rocket or the lovable Grover?
