Jim Cooper champions Planned Parenthood endorsement, reiterates claim opponent is a ‘Trump Republican’

In the wake of the revelations that the U.S Supreme Court could repeal women’s access to abortion care, Assemblymember Jim Cooper highlights his endorsement from Planned Parenthood in his recent mailer. Cooper is running for Sacramento County Sheriff against Sacramento County Undersheriff Jim Barnes.

The mailer was received this weekend and appeared to be targeting Democratic voters. The cover picture shows Cooper in pink boxing gloves he received from Planned Parenthood for his long-time support of women’s reproductive rights and includes the line “Jim Cooper is a lifelong Democrat.”

The flip side has a quote from Planned Parenthood Mar Monte saying, “Jim Cooper has voted for issue Planned Parenthood cares about 100% of the time. And we’re 100% behind his candidacy for Sheriff.”

On the inside of the tri-fold glossy, Cooper offers catnip to Democratic voters. The mailer has a grainy black and white picture of Barnes with the tagline, “His opponent Jim Barnes is a TRUMP Republican,” a claim made in previous mailers.

Although the county-level offices such as Sheriff, District Attorney, and County Supervisors are non-partisan, increasingly, candidates are either self-identifying or attempting to paint opponents in negative ways with partisan voters.

With only two candidates on the ballot, the winner in the sheriff’s race will be determined during the June 7 primary election.
