Local 2 Day Film Festival Celebrates Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage

Film Festival Highlights Local Talent, International Stories

The Sacramento Asian Pacific Film Festival returns to The Sofia, Home of B Street Theatre, for their 7th celebration of Asian and Pacific Islander (API) voices and stories in film and new media.

Presented by the Sacramento Asian Pacific Cultural Village on May 13-14, 2023 from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m., this year’s production is Resonance, with themes including music on film, cultural preservation, justice, and solidarity.

Watch more than two dozen films paired with live stage performances by Davis Bhangra Crew, Harley White Jr. Orchestra, Hmong dance groups Huav Teev Ntuv and HYPU Ntxhais Cia Siab, Vietnamese opera group Xang Xừ Líu, and a closing night performance by Sacramento Taiko Dan.

Documentaries delve into stories of resilience and the self-determination of young Hmong women in the hilltribe villages of Vietnam, a Canadian bhangra group’s quest to spread joyful activism through dance, and the thunderous role of women in North American taiko.

Dramatic features include SONG LONG – a story of an unlikely bond, set against the beautiful tapestry of Vietnamese opera, and WHISPERING SIDEWALKS – a recently digitally restored film featuring the talents of Sacramento-born jazz singer and actress of the 1930’s, Betty Inada.

Short films will showcase new works from local youth of EBAYC Sacramento’s Street Side PROduction program, and film students from CSUS Asian American Studies, and a Saturday panel discussion explores the role of media in uplifting API community affairs, moderated by Pamela Wu.

Emcees include API media personality Shaline DeGuzman and Mrs. Vietnam Sacramento Angie Tran. Select Q&As and panel discussions will be livestreamed by California Music Services and Sean Hidalgo Productions.
