Lodi City Councilmember Shakir Khan reportedly resigns after election fraud arrest
Held without bail eligibility
This has not been a good week for the city of Lodi and one of it’s council members, Shakir Khan. Aside from fraud, gambling, and money laundering charges he and his brother Zakir Khan face, Khan has reportedly resigned from his city council position after being arrested for election fraud.
Yesterday Khan was taken into custody by the San Joaquin Sheriff’s Department on several 2020 election fraud charges. According to the sheriff’s department’s social media post, Khan is charged with:
▪️ Causing/Procuring/Allowing false voter registration of self/another person▪️ Submission of fraudulent registration to Secretary of State
▪️ Submission of fraudulent Candidacy petition
▪️ Aiding/Abetting the commission of fraud at any election
▪️ Subscription of fictitious names to nomination petitions
▪️ False nomination/declaration of candidacy
▪️ Fraudulently casting votes
▪️ Procuring/assisting/counseling/advising another not qualified to vote
After being taken into custody, Khan reportedly signed a document in the presence of sheriffs and other officials resigning from the city council. Subsequent to that, Khan’s attorney disputes that his client resigned from his position and that he was coerced to sign a letter while in custody.
In yesterday’s news conference announcing the arrest, San Joaquin County Sheriff Patrick Withrow said the investigation and election fraud charges stem from Khan’s previous charges for fraud, gambling, and money laundering. Withrow added the investigation was aided by tips from citizens.
“They have brought some things to our attention that we acted on, and all this led to our final investigation and our outcome today,” Withrow said.
The entire new conference can be viewed below.
