This year's election cycle will see competitive races for three out of four Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Trustees seats. The only Trustee unopposed is Sean Yang, the first-term Trustee representing Area 3.

The three competition races are for Areas 1, 6, and 7. In areas 1 and 7, incumbents are being challenged, and two candidates are vying for the open Area 6 position. While school district races are not typically high-profile races, given the recent nationwide focus on controversies like book bans and transgender student rights, they have become more visible.

At least two candidates, Heide Moore in Area 1 and Jacqueline Ortiz in Area 6, are running on a conservative agenda that could address these controversies and attempt to change current district policy.

While some of the candidates have campaign websites or social media presences, only one candidate has responded to the questions from the nonpartisan Ballotpedia. That candidate is Susan Davis, who is challenging Area 1 incumbent Tony Perez.

The questionnaire has a lengthy battery of questions, and Ms. Davis answered the first five. Although she does not directly address issues like book bans or diversity issues, her responses indicate her political inclinations regarding district policy.

When asked who Ms. Davis admires, she cited her grandparents. Of her grandparents, Davis wrote, "Their love was unconditional and non-judgmental. They taught us the value of hard work, integrity, and treating everyone with kindness, even those who might not deserve it. They embraced and welcomed all spouses of their children and grandchildren, enriching our family with diversity. In small-town Montana, their courage in standing against local prejudices was a testament to their strong convictions."
