Organic garbage inspections are being conducted in Elk Grove by Republic Services

During his administrative report during the Wednesday, January 25 Elk Grove City Council meeting, City Manager Jason Berhmann reported garbage inspections in Elk Grove are underway.

Behrmann said the city’s contracted garbage collector, Republic Services, was randomly inspecting residents’ organic garbage containers. Those who were not in compliance were instructed on how to properly segregate organic garbage from other types.

According to state law, those who are not separating garbage will be subject to fines. California Senate Bill 1383 mandates the separation of garbage types.

The law, which became effective January 1, 2022, seeks to reduce gashouse gases released by organic garbage. Behrmann’s entire commentary can be viewed in the video.

According to DLA Piper, “Individual jurisdictions must have inspection and enforcement programs overseeing compliance by businesses and residences. They are required to conduct inspections of grocery stores, distributors, wholesalers, and food recovery organizations to ensure compliance. Beginning January 1, 2024, jurisdictions must initiate enforcement actions if violations are found.”
