Putting the international in Sacramento International Airport – Air Canada to start new SMF flight

Even though Sacramento International Airport (SMF) is qualified to handle international flights, it is not known as an international air gateway, especially given its proximity to San Francisco International Airport.

Today, however, it was announced a new non-stop flight will be added to the roster of international destinations served at the airport.

Starting June 2, 2023, Air Canada will start non-stop flights to Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Air Canada will offer four times a week flights between SMF and Toronto’s Pearson Airport (YYZ).  With connections at YYZ, SMF travelers can connect to several Eastern Canadian cities.

“We are thrilled to see our partnership with Air Canada continue to grow with the addition of a second destination,” Cindy Nichol, Director of Sacramento County Department of Airports said. “By having nonstop service to Toronto, travelers will not only have expanded access to Eastern Canada but also convenient one-stop access to the popular destinations in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.”

Considered the cultural center of Canadian life, Toronto is one of the most multicultural cities in the world, making it a “must-visit.”

“Air Canada is very pleased to offer this new service to residents of Sacramento and the local vicinity,” Mark Galardo, Senior Vice President, Network Planning and Revenue Management at Air Canada, said. “As our global hub, Toronto also offers convenient connections through our extensive network to other places in Canada and internationally.”

With the addition of Toronto, there will be three non-stop international flights from Sacramento to international locations. The other cities served are Vancouver, BC, Canada, and Guadalajara, Mexico.
