Republican Pat Hume receives a large contribution from Democratic Elk Grove elected official

In a race that could determine a balance of power in Sacramento County, the area Democratic and Republican parties have placed a high priority on the District 5 race for the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors. With Supervisor Don Notolli leaving after 28 years in office, and the difficulty in defeating an incumbent, whoever wins the seat will hold office until they voluntarily leave.

The key to victory for Democratic candidate Jaclyn Moreno has been a well-organized canvassing effort, while Republican Pat Hume has relied on a well-oiled fundraising machine. Although comprehensive financial disclosures have not been released recently, Hume appears to have generated more cash for his campaign.

To that end, recent financial disclosure reveals two Elk Grove elected officials have made significant contributions to Hume. Of long-term political significance, one of those contributions was by Democratic Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen.

Recent filings show Singh-Allen, who is Hume’s longtime friend and ally, gave Hume $1,300. Other donations from elected officials include $1,300 from Cosumnes Community District Director-elect Angela Spease.

Hume and Singh-Allen will undoubtedly claim it shows their willingness to work across the aisle. In reality, when it comes to political contributions, it is a one-way street as Hume and other area Republicans are unlikely to reciprocate gifts to their Democratic “friends.”

Singh-Allen can use this as evidence to show she is open-minded and will work with anyone to advance the Elk Grove community. The peril for Singh-Allen comes when she runs for higher office as a Democrat and these endorsements and contributions come back to haunt her.

Of course, like the crafty politician she has proven to be, Singh-Allen will leave herself an out. Singh-Allen could switch back to her original Republican orientation and all will be right.
