Straight-faced mailer promotes Democrat Nguyen as Republican Assembly candidate to Democratic voters
An attack mailer against Elk Grove City Councilmember Stephanie Nguyen and District 10 California Assembly candidates promoted her as a Republican. Nguyen, who is in a pitched primary battle, is a Democrat.
The mailer was received by Democratic voters and promoted Nguyen as a “Republican Value” candidate. Unlike other attack mailers targeting Nguyen funded by the California Association of Realtors, this piece looks like a typical mailer promoting any candidate based on their party affiliation.
The mailer mostly plays it straight by obliquely questioning Nguyen’s Democratic credentials. For instance, under the heading “Find Stephanie Nguyen on the ballot,” it notes, “Stephanie Nguyen may be listed as a ‘democrat’ on the ballot, but she was a loyal registered Republican and supported loyal Republicans.”
Under the heading “Proven Republican Values,” it notes she endorsed Republican Sheriff Scott Jones and “Stood by Mayor Steve Ly after ‘accusations” of harassment were made.” Ly, Nguyen’s former Elk Grove City Council colleague, has also been subjected to numerous attack mailers sponsored by the California Association of Realtors.
Even though the mailer appears serious, just below the fold in the mailer, it states, “Cut this sign out and post safely in your care widow [sic] to show how you’re turning California Red.”
