Sutter County murder victims, one from Elk Grove, may have been known by law enforcement

The Sutter County Sheriff’s Department has released the name of two victims whose bodies were located on Friday, March 17, in a rural area.

The victims have been identified as Vicky Keovilayphone, 40, of Elk Grove, and Derrick James Engelman, 40, of Yuba County. The bodies were located Friday afternoon near Kempton and Brewer roads, several miles from the Rio Oso, and both died from gunshot wounds.

“This is a tragic event, and we will work diligently to obtain answers for our community,” Yuba County Sheriff Brandon Barnes said in a statement.

No further details were provided, but other media reported Keovilayphone was found inside a vehicle, and Engelman was about 50 yards away.

The Appeal Democrat posted stories about suspects with the same names and ages as the victims. Here are the stories of suspects in those cases, Vicky Keovilayphone and Derrick James Engelman, who appear to have been known to law enforcement.
