With Friday's filing deadline, two candidates will challenge Elk Grove's two-term mayor.

Documentation posted to the Elk Grove City Clerk's webpage shows that Brian Pastor and Lynn Wheat have qualified for the 2024 Elk Grove mayoral race. They will challenge Bobbie Singh-Allen, who is seeking her third two-year term.

This year's candidacy is Pastor's third attempt to run for mayor. His two previous attempts were in 2020 and 2022.In 2020, Pastor and Singh-Allen challenged incumbent mayor Steve Ly.

In 2022, Pastor was Singh-Allen's only challenger in her first reelection campaign, which she won with 65 percent of the vote.

Wheat entrance is the 2024 mayoral race is her third attempt. In 2012, with Elk Grove's first directly elected mayoral race, Wheat was one of six candidates, and in 2020, with Elk Grove's first cycle of by-district elections, she ran for District 3.

While Singh-Allen won an overwhelming majority in 2022, with this year's field, a candidate only needs to win a plurality of votes to be elected mayor. Aside from name recognition, Singh-Allen has amassed almost a quarter million dollars in her campaign fund that neither of her challengers can match.
