United Farms Workers march from Delano to Capitol in support of legislation to make Elk Grove visit
A march that started in Delano, Calif., proceeding to the California State Capitol, will go through Elk Grove next week.
Organized by the United Farm Workers (UFW), the 23-day march started on August 3 in Delano, the birthplace of the UFW. The march is being conducted to draw attention to and encourage Gov. Gavin Newsom to sign Assembly Bill 2183, Agricultural Labor Relations Act.
According to a fact sheet regarding the bill sponsored by Assemblymember Mark Stone (D – Santa Cruz), the legislation “expands voting options for farmworkers by allowing them to choose if they want to vote at a physical location, or vote by mailing or dropping off a representation ballot card to the Agricultural Labor Relations Board (ALRB) office.”
The California Assembly has approved the legislation, and it is expected to pass the California State Senate. However, Gov. Newsom has reportedly not committed to signing the bill.
The march will arrive in Elk Grove on Wednesday, August 24, from Walnut Grove. The march resumes at 7 a.m. the next day from Elk Grove’s Buscher Park.
The march is scheduled to arrive at the State Capitol on Friday, August 26, at 9:30 a.m.
