Voices of Elk Grove – Measure E Funds should be openly accounted for
On Wednesday, November 23, the Elk Grove City Council rescheduled a previously canceled meeting with one hearing item. That item was to adopt an ordinance to start collecting increased sales taxes from Measure E.
Speaking during the meeting, one Elk Grove resident, Ms. Lynn Wheat, urged the city to provide a thorough and open accounting of how the extra $21 million in new revenue was spent.
The city plans to deposit the new revenue in the general fund.
While the city council and city staff did not specifically address Wheat’s idea, Deputy City Manager Kara Reddig said in early 2023, the city would conduct extensive outreach on the new tax revenue. Collection of the additional one percent sales tax will happen around April 1, 2023 and is forecast to generate $21 million annually.
The city has made vague promises the money will be allocated to a variety of uses, including public safety.
