Weakening of democracy is the likely goal of Trump, the MAGA movement

The Trump administration's refusal to comply with U.S. District Judge James Boasberg's order to turn around two deportation flights yesterday carrying 300 individuals destined for El Salvador strikes at the heart of America's constitutional order.

By ignoring a judicial mandate, the Trump administration is subverting the rule of law and risks igniting a constitutional crisis.

In the American democracy, the executive branch is obligated to respect and enforce court orders, as these decisions are essential checks on executive power. When Donald Trump and his administration defy court order, it undermines the foundational principle of separation of powers that no single branch can dominate the others.

Even during the Watergate crisis over 50 years ago, former President Richard Nixon obeyed court rules to turn over recordings that showed his involvement in the criminal enterprise. Nixon knew this would doom his presidency, yet he still obeyed the authority of the American judiciary.

With the Trump administration, this idea seems quaint. This erosion of legal accountability damages the credibility of the judicial system and threatens the very fabric of American democracy.

Continued refusal to follow court orders sends a dangerous message - that constitutional constraints can be flouted for political or administrative convenience. Such behavior sets a precedent where executive actions today and, in the future - if American democracy survives - may be guided by personal or partisan interests rather than the common law, ultimately destabilizing the balance critical for preserving democratic governance.

These actions are the path the Trump administration has set us on.

The strength of American democracy relies on the commitment of every branch to abide by the Constitution. Failure to do so risks a cascading effect where respect for the law gives way to arbitrary rule, paving the way for an unprecedented constitutional crisis or worse.

Should this defiance continue, it will damage public trust in government and the courts and weaken our democracy. This weakening of American democracy to the point it become irrelevant is the likely goal of Trump and the MAGA movement.
